As a parent of multiple young children, and a husband who was often deployed overseas with the Army, managing a day at the pool seemed overwhelming. However, my experience with babywearing and a comfortable water sling turned our summer outings into fun adventures instead of stressful tasks. I want to share my journey to help other parents embrace the sun and splashes, even when juggling several little ones.

Being the solo adult supervising multiple children at the pool can be overwhelming.

The Challenge of Pool Days with Little Ones

Summer days at the pool offer a unique mix of excitement and chaos, especially with small children. When you are responsible for toddlers who need constant attention and a baby craving your care, the thought of supervising them solo all around water can be intimidating. I often asked myself how to enjoy a relaxing pool day without compromising the safety and comfort of my kids.

For instance, I remember one year I debated whether or not to keep our pool membership with kids ages 1, 3, and 5 because it seemed too overwhelming. But, the pool was our favorite place to meet up with friends and spend sunny days in the summer. I needed a solution that allowed me hands-free mobility while keeping my youngest safe.

Discovering Babywearing and Water Slings

I was comfortable with babywearing already, but did not know how to combine this valuable tool with the pool. At a babywearing meeting I was introduced to the concept of babywearing specifically for water activities. Water slings, crafted from lightweight, quick-drying materials, provide the perfect solution to keep my baby secure while allowing me to enjoy being in the water with older siblings. From the blog, Water Friendly Baby Carriers, author Karla shares:

Using a water carrier means your baby is secure and you have 2 hands to hold onto hand rails, to carry your belongings, to wash, dry and dress yourselves.

When I tried my first water sling, I was amazed at how easy it was to use. My baby could snuggle against me, and I could still keep an eye on my older kids splashing in the water. It allowed me to enjoy quality time with my baby and have my arms free to assist my older children who inevitably wanted me to catch them when they swam over to me.

This is a tool I used for years. In the blog post, Headed to the pool with your baby? Read this first, author Elise Hall says:

My daughter is now 3, and if a time ever comes when we don't bring the water carrier, I still always regret it.

Choosing the Right Water Sling

Finding the right water sling was essential for our outings. Here are a few important factors to keep in mind:

  • Material: Opt for a soft, breathable fabric that dries quickly. Fabrics like mesh or certain synthetic materials are excellent choices since they withstand chlorine and saltwater.

  • Adjustability: Ensure the sling is easily adjustable to fit both you and your baby comfortably.

  • Safety Features: Look for slings that meet updated safety regulations.

After considering various options, I settled on a vibrant blue water sling that checked all the boxes. It was not only functional but also added a splash of color to our summer wardrobe.

Making the Most of Our Pool Visits

With my trusty water sling ready, I looked forward to our first day at the pool. Upon arrival, the excitement kicked in as my older kids raced toward the water, squealing with joy, while I secured the baby in the sling.

In mere moments, I was fully engaged. The baby nestled comfortably against me, allowing me the freedom to watch my older children. I could quickly jump in and out of the pool, provide encouragement when they splashed, and even receive them with both arms as they swam to me—all while keeping my baby content.

Moreover, the benefit of babywearing extended beyond supervision. There were times when my baby fell asleep amidst the joyful chaos, lulled by splashes and laughter, allowing me to relax and soak up the warm sun without interruption.

Tips for Pool Days with Babywearing

Throughout our summer adventures, I gathered several practical tips that made our outings even more enjoyable:

  • Get Everyone Involved: Teach your older kids basic water safety rules. This makes them feel responsible and engaged. I encouraged them to help with our baby’s swim gear, which fostered teamwork and excitement.

  • Stay Hydrated: I made sure to bring extra water bottles for everyone. Staying hydrated in the heat is crucial, especially for children who are energetic and active. A water sling was a simple way I could hold the baby and nurse at the same time.

  • Plan Ahead: Organize a pool bag filled with essentials. Include items like towels, sunscreen, snacks, and safety floatation devices. Having all necessities readily available simplifies transitions in and out of the water.

  • Use Shade: Whenever possible, we set up our area under a shade umbrella. This kept both my baby and me cool during breaks, allowing us to enjoy some downtime without the sun’s harsh rays.

By incorporating these strategies, I transformed the stress of managing multiple children into a pure joy.

A Summer of Fun and Connection

Looking back on our summer pool days, I am profoundly grateful for how babywearing with a water sling improved our family experiences. It not only made outings easier but also deepened the bond between my baby and me during cherished moments together.

By embracing babywearing with a water sling, we could fully enjoy the joy of summer without feeling overwhelmed. For any parent managing a few little ones—if you hesitate about pool days, consider babywearing with a suitable water sling. With the right tools and mindset, you can create lasting memories filled with laughter, splashes, and sunshine.
